A Family Affair in Higher Education

Last year, my son and I were both in college—an arrangement that felt equal parts surreal and exhilarating. I’ve since graduated and am taking a gap year before beginning my bachelor’s degree (fingers crossed, permanently). My son is now in his final year of Diesel Mechanics, grease under his nails and momentum on his side.
And just as one chapter steadies, another cracks wide open. My daughter—my baby—has been accepted into her college of choice to study neurosciences.
Life has become a blur of scholarship and grant applications, dorm housing forms, and an endless parade of fees. There are parking permits to decipher, libraries to navigate, deadlines to meet, and the occasional, entirely reasonable mental breakdown. Coffee is no longer a beverage; it’s a survival strategy.
I had nerves once. They have since been thoroughly fried—but somehow, in the chaos, there’s pride. And that, it turns out, keeps me going.
